Our walking holidays are focused on enabling you to do more in the great outdoors, and we think it’s important we help look after these iconic landscapes, as well as doing our bit for the environment in general.
A Walk in the Country is a member of Nurture Lakeland, a charity established to forge links between tourism and conservation in Cumbria. Nurture Lakeland promotes sustainable tourism with Cumbria and funds a whole variety of projects, such as Fix the Fells, which maintains and improves paths throughout the Lakes.
All of the team walk or cycle to work each day, and we’re doing our best to minimise energy consumption in the office. Our shredded paper’s composted and our waste paper is recycled.
Sustainable tourism is also about supporting the local businesses, to help maintain and protect the communities you’re visiting. Nearly all our accommodation is independently owned and run, meaning the profits stay within the local community, provide local employment, and help preserve the rural economy.
We try to plan our routes so that they are accessible by public transport wherever possible, and we provide detailed information on getting there and back by bus or by train. We always recommend public transport as the most efficient and environmentally friendly method of getting to and from your walking holiday.
One of our favourite routes
The Great Glen Way is the third longest walking route in Scotland. Follow the historic Caledonian Canal and traverse the forests above Loch Ness from Fort William, at the foot of Ben Nevis, to the vibrant city of Inverness, the capital of the highlands. The gentle gradient marks it as a relatively easy walk for beginners to enjoy while the scenery makes it attractive regardless of your ability and fitness levels.
One of our favourite routes
This route follows the world-famous Roman Wall for its entire length: Traverse this path from one coast to another, from Wallsend, near Newcastle, to the Solway Firth beyond Carlisle, indulging yourself in the history of the region, as well as some great scenery too.
We think that you have done a very good job, both with planning the route and selecting the accommodation. Bags were always moved reliably every day. Thanks a lot for giving us a terrific holiday. 'Would you use us again?': Yes, flawless service, excellent organisation, and well worth the money.

As before we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday and felt secure knowing that it had been well organised and that there would be someone to contact if we had any problems. Thanks again for a lovely holiday.
