Our founder Rick doesn’t let the cold and darkness stop him from getting his weekly walks in. Read on to see how he stays active during the winter months…
“The clocks go back Sunday and with it comes an end to my evening walks. It’s not all bad news though, rather than getting downhearted about the dark evenings, I tend to focus on the positive and look forward to my long Sunday walks.
The changing seasons always galvanises me to do even more outside. It’s amazing how easy it is to take long hours of light for granted in the summer months. With the abundance of light flooding through my windows, I find I don’t even have to escape outdoors to get my daily dose of sun.
In winter it’s different of course, you really appreciate the combination of a few hours of daylight and fresh air. For many of us with busy lives, there is only one free day a week to get out, savour, and enjoy mother nature now that the luxury of several sunny evenings has passed. Although I much prefer the lighter months, there’s something quite enjoyable about planning, preparing, and waiting patiently throughout the week for those long Sunday morning walks. Colder and shorter winter days always prompt me to set off at a brisk pace to warm up and cover ground before darkness starts to creep in. I find that having these five clothing essentials at hand go a long way in keeping me comfortable during my winter weekend strolls.
Walking in winter always causes me to reflect on the previous summer and make plans for the following year. As I meander along, I deliberate and daydream of destinations, activities, warm days, and long light evenings. Once back home and settled in with a hot drink, I make sure to have my OS maps and walking guidebooks at the ready to piece together next year’s adventures.
