Our Great Glen Way walking holiday is a firm favourite amongst walkers of all levels of experience.
Minor note and just for the record: A glen is a narrow valley typically one that is long, deep and often glacially U-shaped, or one with a watercourse running through it. And this one is great. (See what we did there..?)
Opened in 2002, this is one of Scotland’s four long distance routes, and follows the major natural faultline of the Great Glen which divides Scotland from coast to coast. Here are a few of the highlights:
Ben Nevis, is the highest mountain in the UK, and was ascended by Clement Lindley Wragge daily between June 1st and mid October in 1881, where he recorded weather readings at intervals and his wife took measurements at sea level in preparation for a weather station to be built. On average, it took him 11 hours a day to climb Ben Nevis. Publicity surrounding Clement’s exploits resulted in funds being raised to build a path to the summit by 1883.
When walking our Great Glen Way route, you’ll start your journey with impressive sights of Ben Nevis’ north face cliffs and the surrounding terrain. Learn more about Ben Nevis and take a virtual reality tour of the mountain via our friends at Ordnance Survey over here.
Fort William offers a myriad of activities ensuring that you can fully experience the Scottish Highlands, so much so that Fort William is known as the Outdoor Capital of the UK! It’s the perfect setting for all activities on water and land including mountain biking, golf, sailing, and snowboarding.
Explore all that you can do in Fort William here and consider experiencing it for yourself by taking a rest day in Fort William when you book your Great Glen Way walking holiday.
Urquhart Castle is situated on the banks of Loch Ness. People come here from all over to explore over a thousand years of history contained within one of Scotland’s most iconic castles, as well as to try and catch a glimpse of Nessie, the rumored creature living under the Loch. Urquhart Castle was gifted to the National Trust in 2003. You can learn more about visiting the castle here.
